What did I decide to do between the three lenses? I'm keeping the 35mm f/2 IS USM! For me, it's the best compromise in terms of speed, versatility, comfort/portability (size/weight) and cost.

Nice review. Thanks.

To me, the EF 35mm f2 IS has replaced the "nifty fifty plastic fantastic" EF 50m f1.8 as the recommended first fast prime for an advancing Canon photographer.

  • IS provides huge advantage
  • build quality is much better
  • both are very sharp, but 35mm probably a bit sharper, especially wide open
  • faster AF
  • price is reasonable after decreases from too-high introductory pricing
  • works well on crop camera
  • great addition to a kit 18-55mm IS + 55-250mm IS bundle
  • reasonable shallow depth of field images possible with center sharpness
