Dissapointed in the sigma 60mm F2.8, equal to my 34 year old minolta 50 f2

Today i bought the Sigma 60 art. I wanted better image IQ compared to my minolta. If the budget was there i would have bought the Sigma 50 ART f1.4. The reviews of the 60 art sounded convincing so i bought that one instead.

Out of the box there ware some quirks too.

  • The lens hood is ridiculously short
  • The linear af motor makes the focus element shift freely when not powerd on
  • Shiny focus ring, fingerprints visible all over it.
  • Slower startup times
  • less fast autofocus (its not slow, my kitlens is just noticeable faster)

but those are minor issues. Its the IQ i am mostly disappointed of.
I did some tests. They are not Lab test, however i take my tests seriously.

  • Sturdy tripod and surface
  • everything  on the tripod tightened
  • manual focus on both lenses, at 10X zoom, no peaking
  • 2 seconds of shutter delay
  • Electronic shutter to cancel vibrations

Is it me or has the sigma really a hard time to be better than that old slr lens?

Minolta @ f2.8, notice the hexagon like highlights

Some boring 2D high contrast stuff:

Sigma @f8

Minolta @f8, its slightly wider due to the different fl

I am not happy about my new gear. Its not bad, but it feels like I bought something i already have... A "redundant"  feel. Like buying a hammer and find the old one.
I am not sure if i should return the lens. the sigma costed 170€, the minolta was €2,50
