D600 for Sports?

I am considering making the move to FF.  While I would love a D4, that is well outside my price range.  After I sell my DX stuff, I will have about $2k to spend.  I have been waiting for a D400, but I am about to give up.  Furthermore, I am using my CX system for everyday photography.

1) Used D3 - too large

2) D700 - I am worried about "old" technology and want to keep the SD card interface with my iPad and laptop.

3) D800 - probably outside my price range

That leads to the d600/610 if I want FF.

While I will never be a professional photographer, I do plan to shoot my kids sporting events over the next decade.  Would the 600 be an upgrade over my D7000?  Good low light performance in gyms and school auditoriums is critical to my future shots.  I don't expect to get into Macro.

Current FX lenses: Nikon 50mm AFD, Tamron 70-300 VC, Nikon 70-200 2.8 VR1.
