35mm 1.8 (DX) or 50mm 1.8 for DX format ?

I am in a dilemma.
I'm trying to decide between getting a 35mm 1.8 as an all around normal lens for obvious versatility reasons (one should have a fast normal prime), but I'm also thinking of getting the 50mm 1.8 for the superior portrait performance.
However I am worried that the 50mm will be hard to live with in all other situations and I will end up with a lens great for portraits but not much else.
So my question is two-fold
1: Will the 50mm be impossible to work with in small spaces? Will I end up using it just for portraits?
2: Will the 35mm be really awkward in portraits?
I'm going to be setting my 18-55 to both 35 and 50 mm for a while and run around snapping ti get a feel for the two FLs but I'd like to get your opinions on this.
