Feeding Frenzy at the Great Salt Lake (SX50)

Every summer the shoreline around the Great Salt Lake literally comes to life with billions of brine flies. The tiny insects swarm over every inch of shoreline forming a shimmering dark ring around the lake. The files take to the air (lucky only a few inches) in great clouds as you walk among them giving one the illusion that the very ground under your feet has come to life.

The local seagulls feast on the swarm by running though the horde with their beaks agape gathering them in their mouths much like whale sharks gather the tiny plankton that they live on.
