Hi,

Thanks to everyone who responded. Obviously I'm not alone.......

I was always very careful about lens cleanliness and packing etc. I doubt that it was a grain of sand or something like that. It's certainly possible, but if that were the case, it would be likely to fall out after making the first scratch, but the wear mark looks like the product of repeated use. It's right where the leading edge of the cover blade comes across the lens.

I'll have a chat with the staff at the shop where I bought it - they'll have a view about whether Canon Australia will fix it without requiring me to buy a whole new lens assembly. I suspect not. I'll stick with my G1X and the kids can use the G12 on school excursions and social occasions.......

Sounds like a good analysis, Rod.  Again, i am really sorry that happened.  Please do let us know what Canon has to say about fixing it.

Well, then clearly Canon needs to do something about a redesign of the leaf lens cover.  It needs to be a few mils further away from the lens, and they could improve things by rounding the leading edges of the blades and teflon coating the undersides, so even if they wipe across the lens they won't scratch it.  Both fixes would by nice.
