And Olympus has only provided the the work-around to models that are still in-market. The older E-M5, despite being the big breakout hit for Olympus, is not getting a fix because it's being taken off the market soon and they want you to upgrade to an E-M1 so they make more money. (The fact that the E-P5 got the fix indicates that Olympus thinks that the E-P5 is the premier PEN model for at least the next year.)
totally agree..they just want to milk the market.
Maybe you are right and it is a marketing thing. What puzzles me is that some people are so 100% sure that it is marketing only.
You should know that the shutter has to do some complicated things for electronic first curtain. From the specs and from the shutter sound it is obvious to everyone that EM5 and P5/EM1 have very different shutters.
And they also don't share the chip. EM5 has a Sony sensor while EM1 is reported to have a Panasonic sensor again. What if the Sony Sensor can not do electronic first curtain with the same speed as EM5's shutter?
I don't know, and 99,99% percent of people here don't know. Only some Panasonic and Olympus technicians reading here (if there are any here) could know it. But they for sure would not tell it ...
Hi Christof,
Although I am as puzzled as you are about people being so sure about Oly decision-making without actually knowing anything about it, the following things are worth keeping in mind when discussing the prospects of 0-second AS being added to the E-M5:
1. It's just three months since the E-M1 got second 0-second AS, only about one and a half month since the E-P5 got it, and only about one month since the E-M10 got it. So it remains quite conceivable to me that the fact that the E-M5 still hasn't got it is just due to the fact that it takes a bit of time to get it done.
2. The E-P5 and E-M10 most likely have the same (presumably Sony-designed) sensor as the E-M5, in which case the sensor capabilities of the E-M5 should not pose any technical problem.
3. The E-M10 may well have the same shutter as the E-M5 in which case the shutter capabilities of the E-M5 should not pose any technical problem.
4. The E-P5 has the same processor (TruePic VI) as the E-M5 so that the processor capabilities should not pose any technical problem.
