Defective? I bought an E-M5 two years ago well aware that there might a problems of this kind (since there were threads about it early on). Due to the laws of physics, any camera with a purely mechanical focal-plane shutter suffers from SS, just more or less so. And while my E-M5 certainly shows blur due to SS, I am not sure it has any more of the problem than the Pentax K100D and the Panasonic G1 I used before it. However, my awareness of the problem and my ability to recognize it has certainly increased in the meantime.

Why have you lost faith if it didn't trouble you before you became "aware" of it? And why have you lost faith in Olympus specifically rather than much of the camera industry as a whole?

because they obviously know there is a problem with older models and haven't done anything about it.

You didn't answer either of my two questions.

i lost faith because they released FW updates to fix shutter shock for news models ... But not for the EM5. They have admitted that there is a problem in their design. However they haven't released a FW update for the em5 or issued a statement to say there is or there isn't a problem with the em5. I lost faith in Olympus because of this.

why haven't I lost faith in the whole camera industry? An example would be nikon and the d600 shutter problem. They HAVE taken action, issued a statement and even allocated several billion yen to cover the costs of fixing the problem.

I, for one, am looking to jump ship to another brand: either Fuji or Sony who have electronic first curtain on most of their models.

Sony? Yes (at least on most/all E-mount cameras and on the A7 but not A7r). Fuji? Not not to my knowledge.

thanks for this .. it narrows my choice even further. I was considering an XT-1 but now it's down to the Sony A7 (and hopefully the A7 Mark 2 in September).

they are unethical because they haven't fixed the problem in the older models. It seems to me that they want people to ditch their 2 year old "premium" cameras and buy new ones. I call that unethical

Olympus has admitted that there is a problem by releasing the FW update … so now they should either follow through for the older models or expect a deluge of defectors.

You are of course free to jump ship as you see fit. But personally, I think it's to Oly's credit that they have now provided a solution to a problem that is by no means specific to Olympus cameras. Moreover, the fact that the latest Olympus bodies now all have EFCS strongly suggests that future Oly bodies will have it as well (until the global and purely electronic shutter is finally reality). Consequently, I personally see no reason at all to "jump ship" on account of this. What would the motivation be?

How would going to Sony help you take better images from an SS point of view than you could do with the E-M10, E-P5, or E-M1?

So does the E-M10, E-P5, and E-M1. So the problem doesn't exist in those cases either.

no .. But the Sony has a FF sensor and is the same size /weight of the EM1 and costs less! The EM1 is nice but I don't see it as an upgrade from the EM5 but rather a sideways step. If you discount the fact that it has the shutter shock issue fixed of course!
