Olympus has admitted that there is a problem by releasing the FW update … so now they should either follow through for the older models or expect a deluge of defectors.
You are of course free to jump ship as you see fit. But personally, I think it's to Oly's credit that they have now provided a solution to a problem that is by no means specific to Olympus cameras. Moreover, the fact that the latest Olympus bodies now all have EFCS strongly suggests that future Oly bodies will have it as well (until the global and purely electronic shutter is finally reality). Consequently, I personally see no reason at all to "jump ship" on account of this. What would the motivation be?
Seems to me that Olympus just ignored the problem for a long time because they figured that only a small minority of grumpy forum posters cared about it, but after the issue started popping up in official reviews such as the detailed demonstration of shutter shock on the dpreview E-P5 review,
The DPR review of the E-P5 didn't blame the problem on shutter shock (until the 0-second AS had already been introduced and they revised the review as a consequence of that). They incorrectly blamed it on problems with the shutter button.
then they were finally forced to do something and they came up with this kludgy 0-second anti-shock work-around instead of what they should have been doing all along, which was to build real electronic first-curtain shutters into their cameras like other companies have been able to do.
There are two companies that introduced EFCS before Olympus (Canon and Sony) and they deserve credit for that. There are also plenty of companies that have not introduced it yet. They deserve less credit than Oly does.
And Olympus has only provided the the work-around to models that are still in-market. The older E-M5, despite being the big breakout hit for Olympus, is not getting a fix because it's being taken off the market soon and they want you to upgrade to an E-M1 so they make more money. (The fact that the E-P5 got the fix indicates that Olympus thinks that the E-P5 is the premier PEN model for at least the next year.)
All we know at present is that the E-M5 has not yet been equipped with 0-second AS. Whether it will or will not and what the reasons are (business decision or technical impediments), we don't know. It's not yet three months since the E-M1 got 0-second AS. It's one and a half month since the E-P5 got it. It's about a month since the E-M10 got it. I see no reason at this stage to rule out that the E-M5 will get it too.
