I keep hearing about how the D810 is a minor upgrade...

On the net etc...

But actually I'm much more impressed than I expected to be. No, it doesn't have Wifi (which would have been killer), but:

  • a lower base ISO is great,
  • as is useable video,
  • as is sRAW,
  • as is better/faster continuous shooting,
  • as is (the claim of) better tonality and improved high ISO via the new processor,
  • as is the new AF and WB modes,
  • as is the improved OVF (I assume this will be similar to the Df OVF, which is a bit better for optical manual focus),
  • as is a quieter shutter with less vibration, and
  • as is the fact it fits existing batteries and accessories (I love it when an upgrade uses the same batteries for example).

In fact, about the only improvement I wasn't impressed by was the move of the exposure selection to the top dial. I will also confess to being happy it doesn't include GPS as standard even if its a wee bit disappointing that the weight is about the same. I'm genuinely contemplating selling my D800E for this.
