I tested out both the A77 and A77II last night and found the flash assist worked quite well and was very quick in comparison to dedicated red light assist found on the A77.

Unfortunately, despite it having its own on/off setting that can be adjusted even when the flash is set to off, it will only work if the flash is not disabled.  Sony could have easily allowed the flash assist to work without the need of flash having to be enabled.  Just because light levels are low enough to need focus assist, doesn't necessarily mean we want to use a flash for the final output.

While a bit of a disappointment that it can't function if the flash is turned off, it doesn't affect me much since I usually have my AF assist turned off.
