While 2.718 is a "natural" I still feel that 3.14 is more of a round number.

But seriously I do have to agree with the OP and others that a 1 inch sensor is a good compromise for superzoom range and size with quality.

i am being practical.  3.14 is just a teeny weeny too big.  And the ratio of the sides of sensors should be standardised as 1.41421.  Get rid of all this 1.5 and  1.333 nonsense.
