I agree that the second of the OPs shots is the better one for all the reasons you stated, Schwany: focus, leaning away versus in, and able to see the face. The one you posted as an example certainly clarifies that quite a bit. I try to do the same when I'm shooting adventure races or the Texas High School Mountain Bike League's photos.
I'll keep that in mind about Fred Miranda, as well.
