a6000 low light focusing

I just got an a6000 a couple of weeks ago. I went to my first reception with it last night, and was disappointed with the low light focusing. I had the 50mm/1.8 mounted and sometimes it would really hunt for focus. Even with the subject right in front of me, it would zoom through the whole zoom range before it found the target. Not only that but it was SLOW. It felt like I was waiting ages before I could take the picture.

Also when trying to manual focus I had to turn the focus ring way too much to go through the focus range. Is there any way to make the focus ring more sensitive?

After reading the review on here I was really expecting a lot more from this supposedly amazing focus system. Am I just being unreasonable? Am I doing something wrong?

edit: I should add that the lens does have the latest firmware installed
