17-55 Focusing Issues // Do I need to send in?

Hey all, I've had a T2i and 17-55 for a long time now and can never get the thing to give me that pristine tack-sharp focus. My wife and I recently welcomed a baby and I've picked up the camera again and it's driving me insane. Every picture I put the middle AF dot on the nearest eye and when I zoom in it always looks as though the focus is just a tad in front. What's that called? It's driving me crazy. I would say 90% of the shots with f-stop 2.8-5 the eye (on which I place the AF dot) is out of focus slightly. This pic is pretty typical: AF dot on Eye, but the focus slightly in front - the text on the pacifier looks like the focus point. Any advice welcome! (Let me apologize to my son, I realize this is not the most flattering pic of you Edit: Sorry here's the details: 1/100 - f.3.5 - 55mm - iso200

Any advice helpful.
