I've been very happy with an aluminum Gitzo and the Really Right Stuff monopod swivel head with quick release clamp.  I can pop the lens off in an instant for hand-held shots.  I did replace the lens tripod foot with the RRS brand one so as not to need a separate plate.  The combo may be bit above your price range, but it's rock solid with a 300/2.8.  My older Manfrotto, which was just as thick as the Gitzo, sagged at the leg locks a bit under the weight of the lens/body combo (and that is using a relatively light APS-C body).  The extra weight of aluminum over carbon fiber is not that much, but the cost savings is significant, and you can use that savings towards a better head.
