Old or New version Tamron 70-200 f2.8?

I keep telling myself I really don't NEED an f2.8 Telephoto Zoom (already have the 70-300 VR), but that doesn't keep me from being tempted, especially after the recent 3D Pop thread.

Would love to have the Nikon version but not in the budget. Honestly am most tempted by the older version since it is Macro capable and I don't have a Macro lens. Would I kick myself for going for it, or should I spend an extra $500-$600 and go for the new model?

My bodies are the D610 and D5000.
