No, I don't think 'most' is right. Many, perhaps.

Continental Europeans are often quite aware of the fact that there is a different country, with different politics, different laws and until recently different currency within a couple of hundred kilometres of their residence.

You know, on the left side of the pond, hundred years is a long time. On the right side, hundred kilometres is a long distance. Here in the meaning that people generally are aware that things can change a lot in those hundred kilometres.
