Re: T4i and which lens for 60th anniversary party?

I have the same kit you have, and a flash.  Good thing you bought a flash!

If you have access to WHITE walls or ceiling, you can bounce your flash and have good pictures.   White is required, otherwise you will have colors casts.   Don't forget to add a small business card as a reflector on your flash.  This sends a bit of light directly in the people eyes and make them sparkle.

If you still itch to buy a lens, the 40 wouldn't be my first choice.  It's only about a stop faster than the zoom.  I personally have a 50 1.8.  That's 2 stop faster, and better if I need to stop action or need shallow depth of field.  I don't use it too much since the zoom cover most situations.

I often find however that 18 mm is not wide enough for family gaterings.  This cannot be fixed in post-processing...  The problem is usually in smaller rooms, you cannot get the athmosphere and show that many people were together at the same time.  I think the new 10-18 will be my next lens for that reason.  It might be a good fit for you too!
