Diffraction question

Diffraction question for Mike Earussi and others who've written about diffraction on Quattro... and by extension my questions are referring to the Merrill sensor.

I shot the DP2Merrill (and the Canon T5i) often at f/13 ... occasionally even smaller aperture too. I realize I probably should have used a larger aperture, say f/8 range; but what's the trade off of 'diffraction' vs depth of field for a landscape situation? My intention was to capture good depth of field of close detail as well as 'rocks' in the distance, focusing about a third of the way into the landscape.

I also found the above f/13 brought my shutter speed down to 1/200 or less, which I thought was okay for no movement, but I can detect I think some movement, probably due to my movement (with monopod) or some wind, often present.... hot wind BTW.
For a general desert landscape, with mountains or rocks in the distance but lots of detail in foreground, bright light, what aperture would you recommend as the optimum starting point on the Merrill-sensored cameras?
Best regards, Sandy
