Nikkor 135mm f2.8 : any good ?

I'm still fine with the OP's 135 anticipated purchase, except for price.  But for portraits specifically, as several posters note,  the 105 2.5 in all versions was the acknowledged best of its time.  Nikon lens data sheets of the era specify the optimal aperture at f4 rather than the customary f8, at which head-and-shoulders portraits at moderate working distances make the subject appear to pop out in three dimensions from the soft background.  (Nowadays, we call this "creamy bokeh," with which so many of us are obsessed!)   I think that the above factors created the unique 'look' which earned this lens its reputation.  And, back then, you could drive nails or weight down dead bodies with Nikon lenses.
