Cos the first press of the shutter has a higher chance of inducing shake. Common occurrence for burst shooting, shots subsequent to the first are almost always sharper.

If I had to put money on it I would go for this. I first noticed this when I started shooting more airshows again with my 7D. First and last in a series would often be off as I tensed up and then "let off" but the middles ones would be spot on. Doesn't happen as much with BIF or jets because I'm usually shooting at a much higher SS. Its always shooting the prop jobs in those middling SS's trying to capture prop blur where I notice it.
