I don't think we are communicating the same. You said, "but would it have been quite so 'tasty' if you hadn't used..."

Had I not, it would have been exposed brighter than I desired, then I would have had to back off the exposure manually in raw developing, which would have shown even less noise than the raw image above. The JPEG would have been over exposed had I done what you are suggesting.

I didnt make a manual exposure here, the exposure looks correct based on me overriding the the camera's desire to over expose by 1.3EV in A mode. Had I shot this in M mode it would have been 0.00 ev.

I have no desire to cheat and make the exposure look better than the camera is capable of.
