The material of the barrel either side of the rubber grip will indicate the material you'll find under the grip.  The only way to know what structure lies underneath the grip is to remove the grip.  It's probably a smooth cylinder - most are, but I could be wrong.  Most rubber grips are a tube with an adhesive bonding it to the solid barrel to stop it slipping around as it's turned.  Some are a wrap with a seam running along the lens.  I doubt you'll be able to get it off in a way which would let it be reinstalled without any sign of it having been removed.
