Vintage Vivitar 285 Flash with canon T3i Help

I reccently purchased a Vintage Vivitar Flash at a Garage sale. It is a Vivitar 285  Zoom Thiristor. (It is not the 285HV Flash). I do not know much about flashes, but was wondering if I can use this older flash with my canon t3i? Is it safe to use? I know I will probably have to use it manual mode, but hey, I only paid 5 bucks for it. Any one with any info on this would be appreaciated!

Thanks
