My advice would be to keep any compact cam like the SX700 in a protective case all the time except when taking pictures with it. That way you avoid dirt on the sensor, a badly working zoom lens, moisture on the inside of the lens, and the retracting blades in front of the lens won't be bent/blocked or scratch the lens when you subject them to the pressure of putting the cam in your pants pockets.

It seems like common sense to me to protect any high-tech precision items (like a modern 30x zoom digital cam) in a case. Canon (and all other camera brands) do sell protective cases(like you mentioned), you can even choose from a whole range...
