Are we in "Golden Age" of DIY with 3D printers + CrowdSourcing + SOC / Arduino ?

I find myself fascinated by the potential for low cost innovation, DIY, and prototyping that seems facilitated by:

  • SOC (System on Chip) with free tool-chains
  • 3D printers and rapid turn-around of prototypes
  • Arduino small form factor circuit board and free tool-chains
  • Crowd-sourcing to raise money with lower "friction" and overhead
  • ...
  • Our mid-size city has an entrepreneur opening up a commercial grade 3D printer for public use. Could be very interesting.
  • ....
  • My first reaction to Keith C's description of "DSLR Large Format Adapter" was ...
"Wonder if a 'recipe' exists to make that on a 3D printer?"
"Wonder what would be involved to put together a 'recipe' for that?"
  • How about a "printed" pano-head?
  • What about an inkjet cartridge refiller that worked for multiple types of carts, instead of just one ... currently Canon resetters are different for CLI-8, CLI-221, .... CLI-42?
  • Not photographic: Auto diagnostic scanner that provided much fuller instrumentation, like analog gauges (my vehicle just has 'idiot lights', but my mechanic can hook up his SnapOn diagnostic scanner and see pretty much everything such as Oil Pressure, coolant temp. Also, cylinder-by-cylinder performance.)
