Technology, market trends and key new products for a talk

I have been asked at short notice to give a 30 min talk to my photo club on new camera technology and market trends and I would like some help.

The average age of our club members is pretty high and not many of them keep up with new products and technology changes. They are overwhelmingly Canon and Nikon DSLR owners with a sprinkling who have moved to MILC.

In the second half of my talk I am thinking about covering the top end of the compact camera market in some detail, but I would like help with the first half during where I want to highlight some market and technology trends and some key new products launched in the last 12 months.

I have gone through the last 12 months of "News" on this site and have come up with the following list which is probably too long:

Market trends/Technology:

  • Camera phones destroying the bottom end of the market. Manufacturers moving upmarket.
  • MILC growing slowly but has not yet made serious inroads into DSLR market.
  • Canon and Nikon still dominant in DSLRs. Sony very active elsewhere.
  • Pentax taken over by Hoya. Olympus in financial trouble. Photography lossmaking for several manufacturers (?).
  • More FF DSLRs
  • New market segment created: large sensor fixed lens compacts
  • Retro designs: Nikon Df, Fujifilm X series, Olympus OM-D series
  • Improving CDAF and hybrid focusing technology
  • Removal of anti-aliasing filters
  • In camera or in PP lens distortion correction
  • Video – coming together of still and video cameras. BMCC, Canon EOS C100, etc.
  • WiFi for image transfers and remote control
  • Adobe moving to Creative Cloud

Key products:

  1. Sony A7 (FF MILC)
  2. Panasonic GH4 (4K video, DFD) and GM1 (tiny size)
  3. Canon 100D/SL1 (smallest ever DSLR)
  4. Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 and Tamron 150-600mm (both firsts?)
  5. Galaxy NX (android camera)
  6. Canon 70D (dual pixel PDAF)
  7. Olympus OM-D E-M1 – end of Olympus 4/3 DSLRs?

I am going to steer clear of camera phones partly to keep the talk short and partly because I do not know a great deal about them.

I would be grateful for any comments, corrections, additions.
