I do not know enought about iOS though so one think you might want to try out is disable the data option over your 3G connect so that WiFi is enforced.

If the behavior does not change (menas it still disconnects on data rtansmission) it might indicate some compatibility issue. If it does, well Android does allow to prevent to autoswitch off of WiFi to 3G so there might be something similar within iOS

Does seem like a compatibility issue. I just tested with the cellular off and the app still crashes on hitting "send". I'll run by the shop later and ask if this is something they might know anything about (I wish they told me if they knew).

Thanks for the patience and insights tjobbe!

Edit:

Haven't gone to the shop yet BUT I tried the "Autoshare" feature (different from the Direct Link) and it works (??). Using that feature, my iPhone can receive every photo taken by the camera in full 20 MP size. So it's quite odd that the Direct Link version doesn't work at all.

While I'm happy this work, and could mean that the Direct Link could work in the future, I don't think I'll be using the Autoshare feature any time soon (at least until I get my hands on spare batteries to lug around) as I suspect the battery drain will be terrible for both of my devices. Not to mention that the Autoshare requires the app to stay permanently open on the iPhone as even minimizing it will cause the connection to shut down.

Edit:

The last paragraph of the review on this page  supports my findings
