D5100 - best way to get an image like this in focus?

I would have really liked this shot, but the focus is behind the lead girl (goal was focus on the lead girl).

The problem is that the girls are quickly moving toward the camera.

I tried "continuous" focusing but it is just not fast enough to respond to things rapidly moving toward the camera.

Clearly when I took the picture I had prefocused at a point when they were a little further away.

I am so used to half pressing the shutter release to pre-focus, but this does not work here. Is the key, to not prefocus, and then just do a full shutter release when I want to take the shot? Will the response of the camera be fast enough?  Is this a technique issue or is the autofocus of an entry level DSLR like the D5100 just not prepared for these situations?

Any advice would be appreciated.

(Yes I do need a faster shutter speed with higher ISO in this shot - no flash allowed, but that is not the issue here, I believe)
