Now, think outside the box. You need to shoot a traffic light, close up, on a dark, dark, night. You don't care about nearby objects only the light itself. What is the correct WB? (image you are in Adobe Camera raw with the temperature and tint sliders). Hint: matching the lamplight or using a gray card gets you a gray light, theoretically. 'Daylight' won't do it, obviously. And 'Incandescent' will give you the wrong color for sure.

So, what WB?

My initial guess would be to use the color temperature of the illuminant behind the color filter, and if you were to take photos of all three colors of light — red, yellow, and green — then this naïvely suggests that the relationship between the colors would be good.

But this doesn’t make sense, because any variety of filters could be used with matching illuminants with the same visual result. The colors of the lights haven’t changed much after they changed from incandescent bulbs to LED lamps.

Unfortunately, I don’t know if we have a good color model for predicting this sort of thing, and if we do, it is complex and nonlinear and dependent on a lot of other things. You could manually adjust white balance until you get a good impression of a match.
