I think having a basic, under $100 lens to get someone started with a DSLR on the cheap is NOT a bad idea at all. It's not for enthusiasts like those of us who frequent this forum, as one of the first things we learn to do is upgrade from the kit lens when we can afford to. But beginners need a starting point. And in this economy, it's important to offer a basic, entry-level DSLR package as far south of $1,000 as possible.

The real problem is that Pentax doesn't have a *great* kit lens to package with something like the K-3, such as the 12-40 that Olympus offers with the EM-1, or even as good as the 18-55 that Fuji offers. The DA18-135 is not well regarded optically, and the DA*16-50 has a bad reputation on multiple levels. This is something that Ricoh needs to address.

After reading the thread I'm about to link to, and a couple of the links in it, I think we may all be debating how many angels can fit on the head of a pin, anyway... Worldwide sales of DSLRs, across the board, are in a literal freefall, anyway -- down about 50% last year from 2012, and down about another 1/3 the first three months of this year vs. the first three months of last year, the biggest issue being that smartphone pictures have become "good enough" for most people, plus they can post them and/or back them up to "the cloud" instantly, and there are now OODLES of apps for manipulating pics on smartphones (even filters to PUT on them).

Here's the link if you want to read the thread and the links in it, plus my longer response over there THREAD: Is Nikon Dying (something to that effect)

A word is worth 1/1000th of a picture... Maybe that's why I use so many words!
