Time to rethink the KIT LENS idea?

What about first-time buyers?

I think having a basic, under $100 lens to get someone started with a DSLR on the cheap is NOT a bad idea at all. It's not for enthusiasts like those of us who frequent this forum, as one of the first things we learn to do is upgrade from the kit lens when we can afford to. But beginners need a starting point. And in this economy, it's important to offer a basic, entry-level DSLR package as far south of $1,000 as possible.

The real problem is that Pentax doesn't have a *great* kit lens to package with something like the K-3, such as the 12-40 that Olympus offers with the EM-1, or even as good as the 18-55 that Fuji offers. The DA18-135 is not well regarded optically, and the DA*16-50 has a bad reputation on multiple levels. This is something that Ricoh needs to address.
