to be honest out of the 45mm 1.8's I've seen yours is probably one of the top 1% in quality...really impressive from the test shots I remember.

Yes, I have reasons to think I have a very good copy of the 45. But the same is true about my 75 and when talking about these lenses in general terms, it seems reasonable to consider what good copies of each can do.

But I realize that what you are indirectly saying is that the 45 shows quite a bit of sample variation. And I certainly agree with that. Judging by the reports I have seen on the forum (as well as somewhat diverging results from various test sites), there may be unusually many so-so (or worse) copies of this particular lens. I would think that the 75 fares significantly better in that regard.

Even my last copy although not having the contrast issues of ones before it was still slightly tilted. Didn't you shim yours as well?

Yes, I shimmed it to get the focus plane perfectly parallel to the sensor plane. But this is something I have eventually done with all the five primes I am using (7.5/3.5 FE, 12/2, 20/1.7, 45/1.8, and 75/1.8). It's pretty easy to do once you have figured out how so I saw little reason to abstain from this kind of fine tuning. Perhaps that's what you should do as well to get rid of that remaining tilt.
