Many of the pictures posted are simply out of focus or are focused somewhere other than the subject.

If you want to say that, you need to substantiate you statement, Ollie.

Hi Henry. I'm uncertain as to what you mean by "substantiate". By simply clicking on the larger viewer and opening the original files my comment is "substantiated". We could go through them one by one if you like, but surely that would be overkill.

Apart from the new user experiencing the very shallow depth of field of the f1.8 45 wide open, I don't see a problem for these obviously hand-held pix.

Ok. As I mentioned in my post, I was at risk of being a downer. I certainly don't wish to put a new user off, but the thread comment simply wasn't supported by the images within. Is that not worthy of comment?

Focus, move your camera a fraction closer or away before you shoot, and you shift the sharpest plane.

Indeed. Which is part of the very essence of producing sharp images with any lens, yes?

Sometimes it matters, sometimes it does not.

Agreed. However, this thread is about sharpness.

Maybe I am more tolerant of this than I perhaps should be because I do it myself.

Hey baby, I'm lucky if I get one in ten...perhaps worse.

Cheers, geoff
