There is nothing wrong with your camera. What's lacking is simply your experience with photography.

Why is a professional chefs food more flavorful, more robust, more appetizing than food prepared by someone who just started cooking? The food does not prepare itself, therefore the results must be the results of knowledge, understanding, and experience.

Your camera does not take pictures by itself. You determine what light to shoot in, what subject to photograph, what lenses to use, what processing you do on the images (either in-camera or on your computer), etc. Those are personal choices based on your photographic needs and wants.

Buying a DSLR thinking your photographs will magically improve is a false premise. Buying a DSLR is like buying a toolbox. Into it you put the tools (including knowledge) you need to create better photos.

Take your time. Learn how to use your camera. Learn how settings choices affect your images, and, over time, your photography will improve and improve. There is no shortcut.

+1 Very well put.

To the OP: You can select any "Picture Style" you would like (in-camera), and also tweak any of these for saturation, contrast, sharpening, etc.  The resultant Jpeg will reflect your modifications.

And if you are a RAW shooter, the software will also use these settings as your starting point.
