Nikkon 16-85 a good choice as upgrade from DX 18-55 kit lens?

Hi all,

I'm considering the 16-85 as an upgrade from the D3100 kit lens which, although has served me well, I keep hearing is not the sharpest.

Does anyone think this is a good choice, or are there any other suggestions?

I was looking at the 18-105 too, but I think I might prefer the wider 16mm, and I suspect the quality of the 16-85 should be better (based on the increased price).  Is this a good assumption?

I take lots of portrait  shots, but also have a 50mm prime that gets used for this.  The intention for this lens would be for general "family day out" type shots.  I've yet to get a telephoto lens, and might consider a superzoom but I think I might be disappointed by the image quality.  Again, any opinions greatfully received!

Thanks in advance,
