Should I change my telephoto zoom lens for upcoming safari trip?

I have a Canon 500D body and the telephoto zoom lens I use is the Canon EF-S 55-250mm 1:4-5.6 IS. This has been adequate so far for my limited use, however this autumn I plan to go on Safari through Kruger National Park in South Africa. It is to be our honeymoon and we'll be spending 8 nights in the park. I have been advised that I would need a more powerful zoom to get more out of the trip (photographically speaking!) The lens I looked at was the Tamron 28-300mm f3.5-6.3 XR DI. This is a full frame compatible lens that I think would give the equivalent of approximately 450mm zoom on the smaller sensor of the 500D. Am I correct? Is this a worthwhile upgrade? Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
