I know the NX30 seems to have improved the focusing with the addition of phase detection, but given the fact I can buy a Canon 100d for about half the cost, it being almost as small, and have silent STM video focusing, means I will give it a miss.

I think a better choice would be a Sony NEX 6 with 16-50mm PZ. In the US it is on clearance now for about $524 US. http://www.amazon.com/Sony-Compact-Interchangeable-Digital-16-50mm/dp/B0096W1OKS

The 100D is still SLR thick, they can't make it any thinner.

Jaberwok has some great advice on shooting video as well, I haven't ever done much video so try not to comment too much about it.

The Sony seems to have pretty much everything. I did try a NEX 5 once, but I just couldn't get on with the menus. Shame they didn't put a touch screen on there as well.

The ultimate camera for me would be the Olympus OMD M1 - compact, fantastic viewfinder, very rapid accurate AF, great set of lenses (with models that are near silent focusing). Great interface, features etc. but at over £1k it's out of my budget...
