Evaluate process or unprocessed?

There are basically two ways to evaluate comparative images, process each identically and process each to look their best.  The issue comes up with some frequency is threads and posts concerning comparisons.

For example, in Anders W recent noise poll thread, he writes "Both images were processed from RAW in exactly the same way. I used DCRAW rather than any commercial RAW converter to make sure that this is actually the case."  The idea is that we are comparing what comes from the sensor, not processing differences.

LeicaBoss responds "I believe comparisons lose practical value unless you make a good faith effort to process files properly before comparing them." The idea is we care about final processed images and if one processes better than the other, then it is better.

Which approach do you believe is better?
