Auto Focus and Aperture Setting

I am curious as to why auto focus is not available when aperture is NOT set to "A" on AF lenses which an aperture ring. After all, the necessary contacts are still present when one changes from auto aperture to a specific aperture, e.g. f2.8 or f4, etc.

I assume that this was a design constraint that was enforced by Pentax, perhaps to sell newer lenses. Any insights?

Thanks,
