Re: 70-200mm f4 is the highest resolution zoom lens that Nikon makes

It is not. Tried both.

The 70-200 VRII is sharper at F4 and is nearly as sharp wide open at 2.8. The F4 is prosumer glass, very good, but let's not get silly. At F4 my 70-200 VRII can match up with the 85mm 1.8G lens for sharpness at 85mm. Plus with the TC 1.4 the VRII becomes F4 and loses no sharpness.

All of these lenses are so sharp that debating that particular quality is silly. Bokeh and overall rendering across the entire field are more important as is price, weight and AF speed.

But in the end there is no substitute for fast glass. If you get more resolution from the F4 lens at 200mm than a Tamron 70-200vc I'd like to see proof. The only clear leap in IQ would occur at edge of field and less so with DX.
