Hi everyone this one from a walk yesterday.

This gracefully kinetic photo reminded me: Decades ago folks in the lower Columbia River area would gather in February on banks of certain tributaries to scoop long-handled netsful of smelt during the fishes' annual migration upriver to spawn. The supply seemed limitless. We caught buckets and washtubs of smelt, gave them to all the neighbors.

The bountiful ocean returns are no longer. Few smelt are caught by casual dippers in recent years; the season is severely abbreviated. I haven't heard that fish scientists know the exact cause of the change.

Stephen, your shutter speed seems exactly right to catch a shadowy, fluid motion so appropriate to the fish. Also good that you orient the frame so the fishes are swimming upstream.  Ever upward!
