AF Fine tuning long primes - 300 2.8 w/TCs, 500s, 600s

How do you fellows fine tune the long lens - fellows such as Lance, Larry, Alister and others that use the long glass?

Do you use lens align with the long ruler, or some other setup such as something homemade?  Is long lenses AF fine tuning best done in the field, or do you use a lens align and test in the field as a second check? What working distances would you use for 400, 500, 600mm focal lengths? I'm not looking for theoretical distances but I've seen some of Lance's stuff and it is very sharp. So I'd like to know from someone ( Lance maybe? ) what distance from body to target you've used for testing these focal lengths.  Thanks
