How to improve your 80-400

My beloved 80-400 with Manfrotto quick-change foot. Note the hole after I deleted the locking pin!

With this foot it became easier to carry the lens and camera around, but the lens's foot is a bit wobbly ...

The Nikon 80-400's foot is just too weak, but using the hole in the the quick-change plate (the locking pin deleted), with the plate as far forward as possible, you can insert a 3mm stainless screw, and two self-locking nuts, and you have a very stead foot indeed!

Almost essential if you use the lens on your Nikon 1 camera, with the VR off! The slight tension from the nut pressing against the lens barrel seems to have no ill effects at all!

Only disadvantage is that the foot now is in the same position all the time (unless you loosen the nut a bit).
