You need to place it on a tripod, set IS OFF, use ISO80 and use Manual Focus (5m comes out better for landscapes than infinity, I've noticed). Then it's okey for very low light. Actually I'm happy with it in relative low light conditions like indoors. I can use ISO80, 1/2 shutter with IS ON handheld and it renders good. Even ISO800 with IS and 1/2 renders surprisingly good. It all depends on what you want to do with it and that you understand how different settings affect your pictures and you must have steady hands. I don't know about auto modes, I only use P and M where I set everything myself.
Shame it's limited to 1 second for ISO100 and higher so you can't take overexposed landscapes in the dark because 15 seconds just aren't enough in ISO80. This is my only complaint. I sense frustration from your part. We don't know what you did since you didn't tell us any details. Small cameras won't give you the same quality as SLRs. But I have absolutely nothing bad to say about the picture quality of S110. This has 12 megapixels where as my screen has 2 megapixels, so obsessing over 100% crops would be rather funny as I can never see the full picture that way. When viewing fullscreen it's all up to the resampling piece of code how it comes through. Some programs resample smooth, some sharp, some blocky.
