DNG File format compatibility with X3F data

A now closed thread (rightfully so), did have a smattering of interesting discussion on whether or not X3F data can be stored in the DNG container, in a manner useable consistent with raw file processing, or not?   There were arguments that as pertains X3F data, that a DNG can only contain linear data (do I have this right?), and effectively meaning that such a file would be no better or worse than a Tif -- ie.  the capability to recover highlights or remap white balance (such as can be done in SPP with a raw file), would not exist if foveon data was in a DNG file.

I find the topic of interest, because it was posed as a possibility that Sigma could adopt the DNG format for it's cameras, or alternatively write an x3f -> DNG conversion program.  So..  has anyone taken an actual look at the results of X3F -> DNG conversions done to older X3F files that Adobe does offer raw support for?  (SD14s, DP1, etc..)?    Is there a similar degree of raw editing available for the DNG as there is for the native X3F for the same photo (within LR or CS)?

We know Adobe evidently has no plans to support the newest x3f from HERE ; so a DNG option might be of interest, IF nothing is lost (ie.  SPP written to accept DNGs with X3F and can still apply it's own 'secret sauce' if desired).
