Hi Bob

Great composition in your photos. You have the knack for framing interesting photos. Yep, they aren't the sharpest though.

I wouldn't worry to much just yet. It looks like a combination of small issues. A little motion blur, more so in the last one. Dull grey skies, along with low contrast subjects makes it difficult for the AF to find something to lock on to. Thin depth of field is another contributor. Don't under estimate the thin depth of field at 400mm and 5.6f.

Not accurately focusing seems to be one of the prominent problems. This would get my first order of attention. Try to take some shots of brick walls or picket fences at a 45 degree angle to see where your combo is focusing at. This needs to be determined first. So you can rule out front or back focusing, before you move on.

I have to T2i bodies built 2 yrs apart in time. Both front focus with my 100-400. My "work around", is to focus a little back on the subject. While holding the shutter half down to maintain this focus point, I then recompose then shoot.

Here is a shot that I focused on the head. Look at the branch that he is perched on. A classic front focus goof. (Sorry, this not sharp overall do to wind, warm air currents exiting my homes window, etc.)
