Perpendicular Lines?

Or maybe its just contrast?

I used the same process for both pictures below.  In the background there was two small green striped cards.  I focused on the green striped cards first, then let go of the shutter button and composed on the pen.  Both situations provided the same result every time.  One in focus and one not in focus.

Not focused - In this first image you can see that the green stripes in the background are running parallel with the subject. The reticle is depicted in day-glow green. View at full res to see the reticle better.

Focused - In this second image, its hard to tell, but the green strips are running perpendicular to the subject. The reticle is depicted in day-glow green. View at full res to see the reticle better.

Nifty to do inside, but when I went back outside to take a picture of my tree seedling, the new understanding did me no good.  I still had to use the AF/MF option.
