There are people here who are downplaying the very long delay of a 7D update, trying to argue that it's not really that long at all. But if you look at the history of Canon's previous update cycles, you'll see that the 7D's time without an update is indeed quite long.

Not to mention competing brands...

Historically, Canon's 1D-series bodies have generally had the longest update cycles of any Canon DSLR bodies, probably because these bodies get the latest and most advanced technologies which require more R&D time. But the 7D's time in the market without an update manages to easily beat every single 1D-series body Canon has ever made. And by a fairly sizable margin, too.

And it's certainly not because the 7D was made to perfection, and that there's absolutely nothing that can be added to an already perfect camera. There's always something that can be added or upgraded or refreshed. Technology hasn't exactly come to a standstill since 2009 when the 7D was released.

Agree.  Even if the upgrades are incremental instead of earthshaking, no one is forced to buy, and the assumption shouldn't be that all potential buyers have the immediately previous model and may not wish to upgrade.

Hopefully, the long delay is because Canon has something big planned for the 7D MKII. Hopefully something worthy of a nearly 5 year wait. If it's only a modest update, then I would start to worry that Canon is losing its technological mojo.

Again, agree.  Unless Canon provide the 7DII with a sensor which is superior (resolution, noise, dynamic range) to the competition, they have indeed given up the lead and will have demonstrated they have no intention of getting it back.
